When I think back on my childhood some of my favorite memories were on my families boat during the summer. We would wake up early on saturday mornings, pack a cooler with tuna fish sandwiches, sun chips and canned soda. Then we would put on our bathing suits, pack up the beach bag, hitch the truck to the boat trailer and head on down to the lake.
The beach was very small but it had a boat ramp and was perfect for long, hot summer days. We would launch the boat and spend all day going up and down the lake. We would have so much fun in the water going tubing, knee boarding, water skiing and my favorite was boogie boarding. This is where we would tie off a tow rope on each side of the boat and two people would be pulled on boogie boards.
The sound track to these fun summer days were usually filled with Bob Marley's Greatest Hits tape. It was one of my mom's favorite's and it has now turned into one of mine too. All day long we would listen to Buffalo Solider, I Shot The Sheriff, No Woman No Cry, but my favorite of all was Three Little Birds.
"Rise up this mornin' Smiled with the risin' sun Three little birds Pitch by my doorstep Singin' sweet songs Of melodies pure and true Saying', (this is my message to you)
Singing' don't worry 'bout a thing 'Cause every little thing gonna be alright"
Till this day, every single time I hear this song it makes me think of my mother. I picture her smiling, sitting on our boat just enjoying the moment. These are happy and cherished memories of her that I hold near to my heart.
Now, as a mother, I have days that can be challenging with a three year old. It makes me miss my mom even more and makes me wish that I could talk to her, get her motherly advice about how to handle certain situations. So I made a little drawing of three birds and I have it in my kitchen. Whenever I look at it I am reminded of my mom and I picture her saying these words to me, "Every little thing is gonna be alright."
